Writing a description in 100–155 characters
The 100–155 character target on this site is a writing range, not a guarantee that every search page will show the whole sentence. It exists so a description can finish a thought without trailing into a second topic.
Start with the fact the title does not already say. If the title names the tool, the description can name the input and the output: what you enter, and what you see. Prefer a full clause. “Enter a title to see the character count and a width estimate” is easier to finish inside the range than a stack of labels.
Spaces count. So do punctuation marks. When the meta description length bar reads short, add the missing noun rather than a second slogan. When the bar reads long, cut the second clause. The preview also estimates width in Arial 14 near 920 pixels, so a line of wide capitals can clip before 155 characters.
Search engines may rewrite a description from the page body. That is outside this tool. The job here is to leave a sentence you would still accept if it were shown as you wrote it.
If you want the title and the description in one sheet, use the SERP preview. If you only need the count, stay on the length page.
